One thing about being a Peace Corps volunteer is that people have questions.

So here are a few of the questions I get asked most often.

”Are you allowed to travel?”

Yes! As volunteers, we accrue two days of leave every month starting in our third month of service. In total, we receive 48 days of leave to use during our service.

The only downside is that, as teachers, we aren’t allowed to take leave during the school year. That means most of our travel and family visits have to happen during school breaks.

Peace Corps also closely monitors safety around the world and provides guidance on where volunteers can and cannot travel. There is an extensive list of restricted destinations, and several precautions and approval processes we must follow before traveling outside of our host country.

Travel within Lesotho, though, is pretty easy, so visiting fellow volunteers is a breeze!

“Do you have to spend your own money?”

Nope!

Peace Corps provides a modest living stipend that allows us to live at a level similar to the people in our communities.

Our rent to host families is included in that stipend as well.

And if you budget wisely, there’s still room for plenty of snacks and little treats along the way!
